Family identifies victim killed in weekend hit-and-run crash

El Paso News

Family members identified the victim in a fatal hit-and-run crash that happened over the weekend.

As KTSM previously reported, police say a driver hit and killed a pedestrian outside a Lower Valley nightclub early Saturday morning.

The family identifies the victim as 19-year-old Joel Olivas. They say he was at the nightclub Tequila’s Discoteque with another family on Friday enjoying a concert.

The family did not want to talk on camera given the circumstances, but over the phone, they told KTSM Oliva’s was a social person who tried to help others as much as he could.

They set up a GoFundMe page to help with funeral expenses; to contribute, click here.

Nightclub employees said they provided security footage to help the police investigation.

According to the El Paso Police Department, this is the suspect vehicle pictured below.

Police describe the vehicle as:

  • Dark-colored pickup
  • Lifted
  • Large wheels and tires
  • Possible light bar on top
  • Chrome side-step

Police ask anyone with information about the vehicle or driver to call the police department at (915)-832-4400 or Crime Stoppers at (915)-566-8477.

EPPD says this is the first traffic-related fatality of 2019.
