Drivers need to plan ahead for an extended closure in West El Paso. The Sunland Park flyover entrance ramp to I-10 eastbound is scheduled to close on or around March 19 for several months.
Closure of the flyover is necessary so crews can demolish and rebuild a 600-foot section of pavement that approaches the flyover ramp. The process is expected to take through early summer.
During this time, drivers are encouraged to consider taking alternate routes when they can or avoid the I-10/Sunland Park interchange during peak rush hours. Suggestions for drivers who must travel through the interchange include carpooling to help reduce the number of vehicles on the road and allowing additional travel time to arrive at their destinations. While the closure will impact traffic on alternate routes like North Mesa Street (SH 20) and Doniphan Drive, adjacent roads such as South Mesa Hills Drive may also see an impact.
The closure is expected to last through early summer. Once the flyover is open, drivers should expect more disruption at the I-10/Sunland interchange in the months to follow. The I-10/Sunland Park interchange is the most complex section of GO 10’s six-mile work zone because it involves the demolition and re-construction of two bridges over I-10, as well as the construction of two brand new overpasses.
