The El Paso regional spelling bee will now be sponsored and organized by the El Paso Independent School District Foundation.
The move was announced in a news release on Monday. For the last 74 years the bee was ran by the El Paso Times.
The El Paso regional bee includes students from elementary and middle schools in West Texas and Southern New Mexico. The winner of the bee represents the region at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
“The El Paso Regional Spelling Bee is one of the most cherished educational traditions in the Borderland and we are thrilled to be able to pick up the baton from the El Paso Times in making sure our talented students have a representative at the national tournament,” said EPISD Superintendent Juan E. Cabrera in a news release. “We know spelling bees are popular events at our schools and at schools throughout the region. We are happy to help continue this worthwhile cause.”
The date and location of the El Paso bee will be announced at a later date.
