El Paso man among three killed in fiery semi crash near Lordsburg

El Paso News

An El Paso man is among three people who died in a crash near Lordsburg Sunday afternoon.

State police say the wreck happened at about 3:30 p.m. on I-10 at mile post 19.

According to a news release, Jose Apodaca, 47, was driving a tractor-trailer on the freeway’s westbound lanes when another semi-truck crossed the median and hit him head-on.

One of the semis then hit a pickup truck before both tractor-trailers caught on fire.

Apocada died at the scene, police say.

Arizona resident Susan Rojo, 47, a passenger in the pickup truck, and Sean White, the California driver of the other semi-truck, were also pronounced dead.

The driver and a second passenger inside the pickup truck were taken to the hospital with critical injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

Police say alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, and seatbelt use has not yet been determined.

New Mexico State Police will continue to investigate.
