El Paso Fire lieutenant dies after battling cancer

El Paso News

A local fire lieutenant lost his fight with cancer Sunday. Firefighters and family are mourning the loss of lieutenant Rafael “Rafa” Rodriguez Jr.

Rodriguez was a man firefighters said went above and beyond the call of duty. He was lieutenant at Fire Station 24 off Lomaland.

As we’ve reported, Rodriguez was getting radiation treatment for bone cancer. He was diagnosed earlier this year but didn’t immediately stop working.

In May, when his fellow firefighters were raising money to help pay for medical bills they told KTSM he was the type of person always willing to lend a hand.

Funeral arrangements have not been set yet.
