While most parents believe their children are properly buckled up, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has found that 2 out of 3 safety seats are not used correctly. According to NHTSA, child safety seats in passenger cars reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers.

Texas law requires all children under 8 years old to be in a safety seat whenever they ride in a vehicle, unless they’re taller than 4 feet 9 inches. Kids under age 13 are safest riding in the back seat, properly secured in a seat belt or safety seat.

In Texas, in 2017:

  • 408 children younger than 8 years old were seriously injured and 73 died in traffic crashes
  • 411 children ages 8 to 12 were seriously injured and another 30 were killed

In the TxDOT El Paso District, in 2017:

  • There were 10 passenger vehicle crashes that resulted in 9 serious injuries and 3 fatalities for children younger than 8 years old.
  • There were 13 passenger vehicle crashes that resulted in 15 serious injuries and no fatalities for children ages 8–12.

To protect against injury, TxDOT recommends that all children under age 13 ride in the back seat, properly secured in a seat belt or safety seat.

“Having a child safety seat isn’t enough,” said TxDOT Traffic Safety Specialist Monica O’Kane. “There are age specific seats and each must be installed correctly to be effective. Sometimes parents are not aware, our safety events assist with this.”

Each two-hour session is first come, first served and child and safety seat used must be present. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians from various agencies will assist with the onsite inspections.
