El Paso-based institutions ready to help file taxes

El Paso News

Tax season is almost here and local institutions are already providing services to make sur you know what to do with your W-2’s.

More than 24 groups are part of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, or VITA, and they are ready to assist those who might not be able to afford to have their returns professional prepared.

“So if you made under $64,000 a year, you can get the service for free online. If you made $54,000 a year, you can come to any of our sites and receive a one-on-one free tax preparation service”, Community Development Manager for GECU, Ruby Alvarez tells KTSM.

VITA is also getting local students involved by training them to become tax experts that are ready to help.

“The neat thing about this is that there’s actually different sites hosted by different high schools and the volunteers are students. The students take a 14-hour class to be IRS certified,” Elizabeth Gamez from United Way tells KTSM.

Local institutions encourage you to stop by one of their locations before the tax-season rush.
