Eastwood Middle history teacher honored with statewide award

El Paso News

The Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT), the oldest patriotic women’s organization in Texas and one of the oldest in the nation, honored Eastwood Middle School teacher Mireya Perez as the 2018 Outstanding 7th grade Texas History Teacher.

Officials with DRT said Perez was selected after demonstrating how her teaching methods helped her 7th grade students take an interest in the early history of Texas – either by using creative ideas or manipulatives.

“I am very humbled to receive this recognition,” said Perez, who has taught at Eastwood Middle School for 13 years. “My objective is to change the perception that history is boring through a storytelling approach, and by allowing students to experience engaging and real-life activities.”

Teachers are asked to submit letters of recommendation, teaching philosophy and instructional method, curriculum, and innovative teaching methods for 7th grade students as part of the award application process.

Perez will receive a $750 award and a special plaque at the 2018 DRT Convention in Dallas on May 19. Eastwood Middle School will also receive a $1,000 award.
