Driver arrested in Montoya hit-and-run that killed 13-year-old

UPDATE: Police have arrested Samuel Thomas Garcia, 17, in suspicion of driving the truck that hit and killed Giselle Martinez on Friday.

Garcia, is a Sunland Park resident, turned himself into the Central Regional Command Center. 

Police said he was known to frequent a home in the 700 block of Elmwood Court. 

The vehicle was a silver F-150.

ORIGINAL:  Police say they know who hit and killed a 13-year-old girl walking home from school on Friday.

Police sent the following message out on Monday at about 4 p.m.

“Driver has been identified an arrest warrant has been issued. The involved vehicle has been seized with the assistance of NM State Police and Sunland Park Police Department. Additional information forthcoming.”

Giselle Martinez was hit by a silver or black truck around 4:12 p.m. Friday in the 5500 block of Montoya.

She was walking home with her brother when she was struck.

Giselle was legally declared dead Saturday afternoon.

On Monday, her family, gathered at University Medical Center, to say their goodbyes before doctors turned off the machines connected to Giselle.

Her organs will be used to help others live, said her grandfather Louie Martinez.
