Deployed army captain surprises daughter for graduation

El Paso News

Father and U.S. Army Captain Michael Collins surprised his daughter, Tyrae Collins, to see her graduate from Americas High School this weekend.

“Just sitting there, getting ready for rehearsal and I heard my principal giving a speech… And then I heard my dads name announced. I was just overwhelmed, I was excited, and I was just to glad that he could make it,” Senior Tyrae Collins tells KTSM.

Captain Collins is currently on a seven-month deployment in Iraq, and has served the military for 15 years.

“It’s pretty important what we’re doing in Iraq too so they had to weigh that and finally they decided that they could let us go for a week or so to come,” Captain Collins explained.

Tyrae and her siblings were all in shock and were very happy to see him.

“I know that he might miss me when going off to college and stuff… But he was able to be here and that was the biggest moment for me,” Collins shared.

The graduation ceremony for Americas High School was Saturday, June 2nd at 7 p.m. at the Don Haskins Center.
