Counting military kids: New act asks if students come from military background

El Paso News

Local school districts are looking for new information from certain parents this year as part of a law that passed in 2015.

This will be the first year the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015, which asks if students come from a military background, will be required across the nation.

The idea is to use this information to pinpoint which students may need help adjusting to change, especially after a move.

KTSM requested the numbers for the ESSA from Borderland school districts and received the following:

Socorro ISD – 2,962 military students
Canutillo ISD – 203 military students
Clint ISD – 151 military students

KTSM did not hear back from the El Paso and Ysleta districts.
