You could be a winner! The giant Powerball Jackpot is up for grabs.
Stores were busy Tuesday with everyone trying to get a hold of a ticket. More people are expected to head out Wednesday before the big draw.
KTSM spoke to El Paso Financial Advisor Brian Mirau with Capital Management about the odds of winning the jackpot.
“You have a better chance of being attacked by a shark, getting hit by lightning or hitting a hole-in-one in golf,” said Mirau.
He says that the difficult odds haven’t been stopping people from buying tickets. In fact, the larger jackpots are just encouraging more sales.
However according to Mirau, on the off chance you do win an estimated 70 percent of people who land a big windfall, lose it within several years.
KTSM asked some Borderland residents what they would do with the money if they won and what they thought their odds would be.
“Every time we play were hopeful that we can win… and retire,” said Hilda Aguilera.
“The only way I could win is if I found a lottery ticket on the floor,” said Jose Marquez
According to Mirau the chance winning the Powerball are 1 in 292 million. If you are the lucky winner he said “it’s up to you how what you want your lifestyle to be. It’s important for a lottery winner not to make any drastic decisions for six months, like quitting their job, buying a mansion, or moving to Europe.”
