U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations officers working at the Presidio port of entry seized 7.92 pounds of methamphetamine and 5.94 pounds of cocaine in a single seizure Sunday. One man was taken into custody.

“In this case the smuggler was traveling with his girlfriend and her young child in attempt to blend in with legitimate border crossing traffic,” said John Deputy, CBP Presidio Port Director. “CBP officers were not convinced that this was a routine entry and in the end a sizeable amount of contraband was stopped.”

The events leading to the seizure began just before 2 p.m. Sunday when a man driving a 2002 Ford Focus with two passengers entered the port from Mexico. CBP officers searched the vehicle and spotted bundles inside the door panels. CBP drug sniffing dog “Indi” searched the car and alerted to the doors.  CBP officers removed the interior door panels locating numerous bundles hidden in three of the doors. CBP officers seized seven bundles of methamphetamine and six bundles of cocaine.

CBP officers took custody of the driver of the vehicle, 24-year-old Armando Chavira Flores of Chihuahua City, Chihuahua, Mexico. He was turned over to HSI special agents to faces charges in connection with the failed smuggling attempt. His 21-year-old female passenger and her 17-month old son were released.

While anti-terrorism is the primary mission of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the inspection process at the ports of entry associated with this mission results in impressive numbers of enforcement actions in all categories.
