Several school districts are getting ready to resume classes next week including Canutillo Independent School District, and with the new school year comes some big changes.
Safety is a big concern and district leaders are urging parents, students and anyone traveling near their schools to follow posted speed limits and keep a close eye out for students.
Canutillo will have more crossing guards and security guards on duty this year, including a special officer keeping watch over all their schools.
Her name is Alis, and she has four legs and a good sense of smell. She’ll be looking for weapons and illegal drugs.
“We take her to different campuses she shows her presence if we ever feel there’s a need to go to a specific campus then,” Canutillo ISD spokeswoman Liza Rodriguez said. “Same routine as a police officer.”
Rodriguez told us Alis is the only K-9 officer in the region that is trained to sniff out both weapons and narcotics.
Remember both Ysleta ISD and UTEP will be back in session on Monday as well.
