The holidays are about spending time with family and vacation rental service Airbnb said El Paso homeowners are giving more people a chance to visit family in the borderland.

Airbnb said many travels will be renting a room or home in El Paso County during the holidays. The busiest day of the year is Christmas Eve.

“We’re seeing a huge spike. This is going to be one of the biggest days we’ve ever had, specifically in El Paso. So on Christmas Eve about 560 guests are scheduled to be staying in a home in El Paso,” said Ben Breit, a Airbnb Public Affairs Manager.

Breit said those guests are expected to spend money eating out and shopping.

Senior women are the fastest growing demographic in El Paso County of Airbnb hosts. Breit said there are more than 300 hosts in El Paso more than half of them are senior women.

“They are seeing ‘hey I’m an empty nester and the kids have grown up. They’ve left the home. All of a sudden I have a room or two that are just sitting there’ and years ago they would have been collecting dust,” said Breit.

The seniors are gaining extra income by renting out spare rooms.
