A man previously convicted of negligent homicide was caught by U.S. Border Patrol Agents stationed in El Paso as he was trying to enter the country.

Alberto Antonio Coreas Mejia, 41, was detained, along with two others, after they were seen on camera trying to illegally enter the country near the Asarco area, according to a Border Patrol news release.

They were spotted by agents laying flat in a canal north of Paisano Drive. They were arrested and taken to the Paso Del Norte Texas Processing Center, the release said.

Once there a database search showed that Coreas Mejia, who is from El Salvador, had been convicted for criminally negligent homicide and had served four years in prison. He also had been arrested for resisting arrest and attempted burglary in 2013 and had been removed from the country in 2017, the release said.

He is currently being held in the El Paso County Jail pending criminal proceedings and removal, the release said.
