Blood donations drop during the holidays, more El Paso donors needed

If want to give to charity this season, you may want to think of giving blood for the holidays. This time of the year is when it’s needed the most.

Blood donation center, Vitalant, told KTSM donations drop by 20 percent during the holidays, compared to the rest of the year.

Many people who already have appointments cancel them or don’t show up during the holidays. The center said people get busy with everything from shopping to traveling.

Vitalant said it takes less than an hour for the entire process. The center is hoping people will find time from their busy schedule to donate.

Even businesses who sometimes have blood drives for employees don’t have many drives during this time of year because employees are taking more time off.

While there is less supply, there is a bigger demand.

“Just because it’s Christmas, doesn’t mean patients are not using blood. There are more accidents. We do see an increase in the usage of blood during this time as well,” said David Veloz, Senior Director of Donor Recruitment.

In the El Paso area, about 175 blood donations are needed daily.

The center provides incentives to try to get more donors. Right now they are offering free t-shirts.
