EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) - The Hospital of Providence Children's Hospital has earned the highest designation a NICU can earn in Texas.
The NICU at Providence earned Level 4 Designation. That's the highest level of care available for premature and critically-ill newborns.
Doctors can give the most specialized care to the sickest babies and send them home sooner.
One of the things this NICU has is a donor breast milk program to give babies human milk instead of cow milk.
The unit also has an antibiotic program that helps get newborns on antibiotics as soon as they need them and off them faster.
Doctors said even before babies are born, the hospital provides high level care.
"The Providence Hospital Memorial Campus NICU is the only NICU in all of El Paso and the surrounding area that is both Texas level 4 designated NICU and perinatal certified. It's the highest levels of both," said Dr. Gregory Welch, the Medical Director of NICU at Providence.
The Providence Children's Hospital NICU can care for a wide range of illnesses and conditions and is fully prepared to perform surgery when needed.
