Proposal would make New Mexico a ‘sanctuary state’

A new bill could turn the Land of Enchantment into a sanctuary state.

Democratic proposals in both the House and Senate would prevent state agencies from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.

It would also limit the authority of sheriffs and jails to hold federal immigration detainees.

A number of New Mexico cities and towns have already declared themselves sanctuaries for immigrants living in the country illegally.
