SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KTSM) – More than 400 undocumented migrants were arrested by Border Patrol agents on Tuesday morning in Sunland Park.

The migrants were found just before midnight in Sunland Park, all within a few hours. The total number of apprehensions was 424, according to a Border Patrol news release.

While that was happening, 230 migrants illegally crossed and were arrested at about 2 a.m. near the Antelope Wells Port of Entry.

Both groups were made up of mostly Central American families and unaccompanied juveniles.

“This is an ongoing situation that U.S Border Patrol agents are facing in far west Texas and southern New Mexico: hundreds of parents and children being encountered by agents after having faced a dangerous journey in the hands of unscrupulous smugglers,” a Border Patrol news release said. “Criminal organizations continue to exploit innocent human lives in order to enhance their illicit activities without due regard to the risks of human life.  In most cases, these smugglers never cross the border themselves in order to avoid apprehension.”
