Las Cruces City Council votes to transfer $500k to help migrants

Immigration

During a special meeting on Thursday, Las Cruces City Council approved an adjustment in the city’s budget to help assist the large groups of migrants who continue to arrive in the area.

According to an item posted on the agenda, $500,000 will be transferred from the Telshor Facility Fund balance to the Health Services Fund in an effort to provide emergency assistance to migrants.

The city says it will use the money for shelter, food, water, emergency transportation, and personal hygiene products.

As of Thursday, officials say Las Cruces has received more than 2,000 asylum seekers in recent weeks.

The city also announced that they have leased a former armory site that can temporarily house 200 migrants.

Mayor Miyagishima tells KTSM this is a way they are planning ahead for the expected high number for migrants.
