Hundreds of immigrants crossed into the the United States and surrendered to Border Patrol agents Monday morning next to Loop 375 in the Riverside High School area.

According to a Border Patrol spokesperson, agents arrested more than 400 immigrants near Midway and the Ysleta Port of Entry at about 8 a.m.

Officials have not yet confirmed where the immigrants came from.

According to Border Patrol, there has been a “consistent uptick of illegal entries in this area”.

Officials say it’s typically more common to have large groups cross in more rural or remote — and not urban — areas.

“We have seen the activity shift more towards the urban areas than what we normally have seen in the past,” Joe Romero tells KTSM. “The urban crossings put this more in the public view than before where high numbers occurred but did not draw the same attention due to the remote areas.”
