Two undocumented immigrants have died, and nine other people were apprehended, following a pursuit with El Paso Border Patrol agents in Southern New Mexico Saturday evening.

Officials say the agents responded at about 6 p.m. to a report of a suspected smuggling incident on Highway 9 near mile marker 142, about 40 minutes south of Lordsburg.

According to a news release, the vehicle failed to yield to emergency lights and sirens, prompting agents to deploy a tire deflation device.

The vehicle then swerved away from the device and rolled over. Two passengers were ejected and died at the scene.

Border Patrol then provided emergency care and contacted emergency responders, officials say.

According to the release, five of the 11 passengers were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials identified the driver as a 27-year-old man who is a U.S. citizen. He was among those taken into custody.

The names of the two people who died in the incident have not yet been released.
