Woman arrested in deadly Sunland Park fire


Police arrested a woman in connection with a Sunland Park fire that claimed the life of an 8-year-old girl last week.

According to a news release, Jocelyn Ontiveros, 30, was taken into custody at about 9:45 p.m. Friday on the 1000 block of McNutt.

As KTSM previously reported, the fire happened during the early morning hours of Dec. 13.

Marisa Munoz, 8, was killed while two other children were flown to a burn center in Lubbock.

Officials say Ontiveros is being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.

She is facing the following charges: 

  • Eight counts of arson
  • Five counts of child abuse
  • Four counts of assault with intent to commit a violent felony
  • One count of tampering with evidence
  • One count of criminal damage to property of more than $1,000
