Three people shooting guns in the desert as target practice led police to respond and an area high school to be put on high alert.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office responded to a desert entrance off Pete Domenici Highway and Airport Road on a “shots fired” call at about 2:30 p.m.

Deputies arrived and found three people who were target practicing, said a Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

No further action was required, but the call alone was enough to put Santa Teresa High School on a “police shelter” alert for about half an hour, a school district spokesman said. The high school is about three or four miles from where the call originated.
