Second suspect confirmed in deadly Sunland Park arson case


KTSM has confirmed that a second suspect is in custody in connection with the Sunland Park mobile home fire that left an 8-year-old girl dead.

According to a City of Sunland Park spokesperson, police arrested Juan Carlos Holguin at about 6:15 Friday evening.

Holguin’s arrest happened about seven hours before Jocelyn Ontiveros was taken into custody.

As KTSM previously reported, the fire happened on the 100 block of Mesquite during the early morning hours of Dec. 13.

Marisa Munoz, a third grade student at Desert View Elementary School, was killed in the fire while two other children were injured.

According to a Dona Ana County booking report, Holguin, 42, is facing the following charges:

  • Eight counts of arson
  • Eight counts of conspiracy to commit second degree felony
  • Five counts of child abuse
  • Four counts of assault with intent to commit a violent felony
  • One count of conspiracy to commit first degree felony

He is being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Facility.
