Santa Teresa Middle School coach accused of propositioning teen

Crime

A Santa Teresa Middle School track and soccer coach was arrested Wednesday on charges stemming from allegations that he propositioned a 14-year-old female student just weeks ago.

Matthew Evan Bird Soto, 30, of El Paso is charged with one count of Child Solicitation by Electronic Device and two counts of Criminal Sexual Communication with a Child.

According to the Sunland Park Police Department, Soto began communicating with the teenage girl through social media just weeks ago. He is suspected of sending sexually explicit messages, videos and photos of himself to the girl.

Soto allegedly admitted to asking the teen for a kiss on his birthday, which was the day of his arrest. He went on to say he was willing to get her out of class to “hook up” with her.

“We would like to remind parents to be cognizant of your child’s social media activity to help protect your child from predators. Parental monitoring can provide specific details about your child’s online activity,” Sunland Park Police Detective Daniel Perez said in a press release.

Soto, an Air Force veteran, has been coaching track and soccer at Santa Teresa Middle School in Sunland Park since 2016. He is currently behind held without bond at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
