Police arrested a teenager for vehicle theft Tuesday morning as the department continues cracking down on unattended running vehicles.

According to a news release, Antonio Baires, 17, allegedly stole a running gray Nissan that was parked on the 5500 block of Dearborne at about 7:45 a.m.

Police say Baires was charged with Theft Over $2,500 – Under $30,000 and booked under a $25,000 bond.

The teen’s arrest happened during the Auto Theft Task Force’s two-day operation aiming to curb running unattended vehicles.

Officers discovered 68 such vehicles in Northeast El Paso between Tuesday and Wednesday.

As KTSM previously reported, leaving running vehicles unattended not only makes for an easy target for thieves, but is also illegal and can result in a fine.

Police say two citations were issued during this week’s operation.
