The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has released the mugshot of the man they say drove at Horizon Police Department officers on Sunday night.
Sergio Gonzalez, 25, was arrested on two counts of aggravated assault on a public servant after a car chase where officers fired at Gonzalez’ vehicle.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the shooting which happened at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.
The incident started in the 14000 block of Jeweled Desert when Horizon Police Department officers were trying to pull over a vehicle that was going 80 mph in a 35 mph zone, but the driver refused to stop.
The sheriff’s office said Gonzalez was the driver.
The vehicle was eventually cornered in a cul de sac at Roslyn and Jeweled Desert but as officers approached the vehicle it accelerated towards the officers and hit one in the leg and then crashed into a patrol unit.
Officers fired their weapons at the vehicle as it fled and the chase continued a little while longer before Gonzalez stopped and was arrested.
No one was hit or injured as a result of the gunshots, but the incident is under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit and the Texas Rangers, which is standard in an officer-involved shooting.
Gonzalez was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on suspicion of aggravated assault on a public servant.
