Man sentenced to 180 days in jail, 10 years probation for 2017 drunk driving death of El Paso nurse


An El Paso man was sentenced to 180 days in jail and 10 years of probation in connection with the 2017 drunk driving death of a local nurse, the El Paso Times reports.

As KTSM previously reported, the incident happened at about 1:45 a.m. on March 1, 2017 during a Mardi Gras party near 2900 N. Stanton.

Police say Lorenzo Anchondo, 26, was drunk when he ran over a curb and drove into a stop sign, which then fell and struck Xiaoyan Shi, 33.

Shi sustained major head injuries and died at the scene.

According to the El Paso Times, Anchondo was sentenced Thursday evening on one count of intoxication manslaughter.

He will will spend the 180 days behind bars before he begins his probation term, according to the report.

As KTSM previously reported, Shi was an ICU nurse at Del Sol Medical Center. She is survived by her husband and young daughter.

The hospital released the following statement regarding her death:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a member of our Del Sol Medical Center family. Our thoughts and prayers are with her loved ones during this difficult time.
