An elderly man is in custody after allegedly crashing his vehicle into a West El Paso business and pulling out a gun.

According to police, officers responded at about 9:20 a.m. to the Discount Auto Service & Body Shop located at 4900 Doniphan.

Police say the man was sitting in his vehicle inside a garage bay while holding a gun and threatening to harm himself.

A veteran officer spoke to the man for several minutes before he surrendered and was taken for a mental health evaluation.

According to a news release, the man reported being distraught over the death of a loved one Friday morning and said his vehicle was in the shop for several weeks, despite having spent a “substantial amount” of money.

Police are investigating the allegation.
