An El Paso man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for killing a former KLAQ DJ in 2016.
Leonel Hernandez was taken into custody following the reading of the sentence by the jury.
He was convicted for the murder on Wednesday morning and it took the jury a few hours to reach a verdict on his sentence.
The prosecution said justice was served.
“I thought we did a very nice trial and I think we got justice Rick and his daughter and all those that love him,” said Stacy Scofield, the lead prosecutor.
Prosecutors said Hernandez shot Madrigal out of jealousy because Madrigal was partying with Hernandez’ girlfriend that weekend.
They showed text messages from phone records to show a conversation between Hernandez and his girlfriend at the time, Marinda Palacios.
Palacios was at the scene of the shooting when it happened and also spent two days with Madrigal before he was killed.
The state prosecutors offered Palacios immunity in exchange for her testimony against Hernandez. She previously faced a charge of failure to report a felony for allegedly not calling police when the murder happened.
Hernandez family said an innocent man has been convicted.
“It was proven with evidence and everything. They had all the evidence. We don’t understand what happened. We don’t understand anything,” said Eloisa Martinez,Hernandez’ aunt.
