An off-duty security guard allegedly shot his girlfriend Tuesday in Las Cruces.

Israel Salas, 28, is facing one count of aggravated battery against a household member, which is a third-degree felony.

Police received the call of a gunshot at about 9 p.m. on Feb. 12 in the 1100 block of E. Boutz Road, the Las Cruces Police Department said.

Officers arrived at the apartment and found a 24-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her shoulder. She was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said that at first Salas told them he had placed his 9mm handgun on a kitchen counter when it somehow discharged and hit his girlfriend.

Later, Salas told officers that he ejected the gun’s magazine, pointed the firearm at his girlfriend and pulled the trigger. He admitted he did not clear the chamber for a live round before pulling the trigger.

Salas was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center early Wednesday morning and released by 1 p.m. on Wednesday on a $2,000 unsecured bond.
