Former Fort Bliss soldier found guilty of roommate’s murder

Former Fort Bliss soldier Joe Cabral has been found guilty in the shooting death of his roommate last year.

As KTSM previously reported, Private First Class Zachary McGuire, 21, was shot and killed after he and Cabral reportedly got into an argument while moving into an East El Paso apartment in February 2018.

Both men were stationed at Fort Bliss as infantrymen with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team at the time of the shooting.

Cabral took the stand Thursday morning, testifying that he and McGuire were teasing each other right before the shooting.

Cabral said McGuire called him a terrorist, so he accused McGuire of sleeping with transsexuals.

During his testimony, Cabral claimed that McGuire then became angry and pointed a gun at his head.

That’s when Cabral said he pulled the trigger out of fear.

After firing the shots, Cabral said he tried helping the victim by applying pressure to his gunshot wounds and calling 911.

Cabral faces five to 99 years in prison. Sentencing will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.
