A man is behind bars for allegedly driving while intoxicated, evading arrest, and injuring a police officer overnight.
According to a news release, the officer stopped Tomas Barraza, 22, at about 2:15 a.m. Friday for speeding on the 1300 block of N. Zaragoza.
Police say the officer suspected Barraza was intoxicated and attempted to detain him. The man then allegedly accelerated away from the scene, dragging the officer for several feet.
The officer was taken to a nearby hospital to treat his non-life-threatening injuries.
Police later found Barraza driving in an East El Paso neighborhood and attempted to pull him over. He allegedly refused to stop and led officers on a pursuit before his car became disabled.
Police took Barraza into custody following a brief struggle, according to the release.
Barraza was charged with aggravated assault of a public servant, two counts of evading arrest, and resisting arrest. Additional charges are pending.
He was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility under bonds totaling more than $100,000.
