A man is in jail after he allegedly hit a broken down car in East El Paso Friday night, leaving a driver seriously injured.

As KTSM previously reported, the crash happened at about 8 p.m. at the intersection of Yarbrough and Montwood.

According to a news release, Jose Vazquez, 51, was driving his Jeep on the southbound lanes of Yarbrough when it broke down.

Police say Vazquez then turned on his emergency blinkers and was standing outside of the vehicle when an SUV hit it from behind.

The driver, later identified as Jesus Ponce, 31, reportedly ran away from the scene.

Vazquez was taken to the hospital to treat his serious injuries. Police have not yet provided any updates on his condition.

According to the release, Ponce later returned to the scene and told officers that he was a passenger. However, several witnesses proved otherwise.

Police charged Ponce with Intoxication Assault and booked him into the El Paso County Detention Facility under a $50,000 bond.
