The City of El Paso had 23 murders in 2018, which was the most the city has seen since 1997, when there were 25.
The numbers are according to El Paso Police Department statistics, which were released on Wednesday.
El Paso has averaged 23 murders per year over the last 59 years, but only had an average of 16 per year for the last 10 years and 18 per year for the last five years.
The most murders in one year were in 1993 with 56.
The peak period came from 1980 to 1995 when El Paso averaged 39.5 murders per year.

“(It’s) domestic than any type of murder,” Lt. Reginald Moton of the Crimes Against Persons unit told KTSM. “But we also have those that result from fights in a bar or fights from a party.”
The police department’s Crimes Against Persons unit has filed charges in 95.6 percent of its cases over the last five years, a news release said. The national average is 61.6 percent.
