El Paso Police say they’ve arrested and charged two men suspected of carjacking a couple at gunpoint in East El Paso early Saturday morning.

According to investigators, the couple were sitting in a 2013 Mazda 3 in the 1500 block of Diego Rivera Drive around 2:30 a.m. June 16. The victims told police they were approached by two men, one who allegedly had a knife and the other with a gun. The suspects reportedly stole the car and left the area.

Auto Task Force officers located the vehicle on Wednesday and arrested the driver, Edward Mercado, 23. Inside the Mazda, police say they located the gun believed to be used in the robbery.

Late Thursday night, EPPD tactical officers located and arrested the second suspect, identified as Ruben Galindo, 24.

Mercado is charged with aggravated robbery, unlawful carrying of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance. His bonds totaled $81,000. Galindo is facing aggravated robbery, theft and various traffic warrants. His bonds totaled $78,800.
