Las Cruces police have charged a man suspected of stealing a backpack and $2,200 computer from inside a local church.

Eric Martin Carnero, 40, of the 800 block of Pinon Street, is charged with one count of larceny more than $500. The charge is a fourth-degree felony.

Las Cruces police learned that on June 6, someone stole a backpack containing a laptop computer from inside the Calvary Chapel Three Crosses, at 4301 Bataan Memorial West.

Police learned that the church had a video surveillance system that captured images of the suspect who stole the backpack.

The owner of the backpack posted surveillance camera still images of the suspect on a social media page. The post generated several responders who identified the suspect as Eric Martin Carnero.

Carnero, himself, responded to the social media post and asked that his image be removed from the site.

Las Cruces police investigators reviewed surveillance camera images with a known photo of Carnero and positively identified him as the suspect in the case.

A warrant was issued in early November for Carnero’s arrest. He surrendered himself to Magistrate Court on Tuesday morning and has been scheduled a court date.
