A 14-year-old Santa Teresa Middle School was detained Thursday afternoon for allegedly making a false 911 call.

According to a news release, the caller claimed that a shooting was in progress, prompting a shelter-in-place at the campus.

Officials say the student was taken to the Juvenile Probation Office for Obstruction of the Educational Process, and Use of Telephone to Terrify, Intimidate, Threaten, Harass, Annoy or Offend.

According to the release, the student will soon appear before the Dona Ana County, New Mexico Third Judicial District Court.

“We want to assure the public that this was a single isolated incident being handled by the school and the police department,” Detective Daniel Perez said. “We also want to remind students and residents that prank calls like these are taken very serious.”
