Memorial services set for El Paso’s ‘Sandman’

Community

Memorial services for El Paso’s iconic “Sandman” are set to take place this week.

As KTSM previously reported, Albert Avila died last Thursday after years of battling liver cancer.

The 65-year-old was known for his elaborate sand artwork in parking lots and busy intersections in East El Paso.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. on Monday at the Crestview Funeral Home located at 1462 Zaragoza. A vigil is also scheduled for 7 p.m.

A mass for Avila will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Pius Catholic Church before his burial later that morning.

Avila’s family told KTSM that his health started declining last year. They created a GoFundMe page to prepare for his final expenses.
