J Russell joined the KTSM 9 News team as a Morning/Noon Anchor in July 2020. J is a native of the Phoenix area and is thrilled to call the Borderland home.
Prior to making his way to El Paso, he’s worked his way around the South as a sports anchor before returning home as a reporter at the Phoenix CW.
J worked at KMID-TV in Midland, TX, KLAF-TV in Lafayette, LA, and KBMT-TV in Beaumont, TX.
During that time he covered several major sporting events including the 2018 Western Conference Finals, Super Bowl LI in Houston, and the 2017 NBA All-Star Game.
After his time working in Phoenix as a lifestyle/entertainment reporter, J began to see a career outside of sports.
That brought him to the Sun City to display his dynamic and contagious personality.
His favorite places to visit in the Borderland are the White Sands National Park and the views from Scenic Drive. J says it’s amazing to view two countries and three states in one spot.
He is very active in the community speaking to the youth at school/churches about how to reach their goals, mentoring aspiring journalists and is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).
Since moving to our community, J is also the Public Relations and Communication committee chair for the El Paso NAACP and a member of the El Paso Young Black Leaders organization.
J’s first name has only one letter because his father named him after basketball legend, Julius Erving. (Remember Dr. J?)
In his spare time he enjoys watching movies, mountain biking, go-kart racing, photography, traveling, checking out new restaurants, playing old school board games, and could bust a move on the dance floor.
Catch him Monday through Friday from 5-7 a.m. and at noon rocking a flower lapel pin in his suit jacket. Our morning anchor is a fan of fashion.
J is a friendly person and would love to meet new people. If you see him around the Borderland, feel free to say hello, and follow him on Instagram.
