GOES-14 Catches 3 Tropical Systems
August 19, 2009 - 11:27am

Just in time for a suddenly active tropical season, the newest weather satellite takes it's first full IR image of Earth. Launched back in June, the new GOES-14 (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) took it's first full-disk scan infrared image of planet Earth. The satellite caught Ana, Bill, and Claudette all spinning about across the United States. For more information on the GOES and other satellites that watch over our Earth and provide invaluable weather data you can go here: http://goespoes.gsfc.nasa.gov/goes/index.html

Also remember to check out our Hurricane Tracker! It's located on the bar above and far right. It's got information on Hurricane Bill, which has become the first major hurricane of the 2009 season. As of this blog, the storm had winds of 135 miles per hour. We'll talk more about the storm over the coming days.
