Rainfall, Wind and Hail Numbers from the Recent Storms

Weather Talk

POSTED: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 - 12:31pm

UPDATED: Wednesday, July 2, 2014 - 12:40pm

Parts of the Borderland saw 1.5" diameter hail, up to 1.30" in rainfall, 50 to 60+mph storm gusts, a "haboob" and some flooding

Finally some good rain! Yesterday’s late day, evening and nighttime and this morning’s thunderstorms brought welcome relief to parts of the Borderland. Now we did need to catch up all at once ! Because in some parts of the Borderland there was enough heavy rainfall for some localized flooding. Las Cruces saw some large 1.5” diameter hail, and 1.30" of rain! Even a "haboob" rolled into El Paso! (A “Haboob” is a line of rolling blowing dust and damaging winds caused by the downburst of wind from a powerful dying thunderstorm.) We saw it all and our  local National Weather Service (NWS) of El Paso, located in Santa Teresa, NM, along with their network of “SKYWARN” trained weather spotters were on top of it! They did an excellent job keeping the media and the public advised and warned of the strong winds, blowing dust, severe storms, heavy rain, localized flooding and large hail.

The NWS put out 13 Storm based warnings on July 1st, 2014 for the Borderland, here is a break down;

Before Midnight on Tuesday, July 1st, 2014
8- Severe Thunderstorm Warnings
2-Flood Warnings (Las Cruces, SE El Paso & NW Hudspeth Counties)
3-Flood Advisories

After Midnight into the early morning on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2014
1- Flood Warning (Alamogordo, White Sands)
2- Severe Thunderstorm Warning ( La Luz, Tularosa)
