El Paso is one of the Sunniest Cities in the Nation

How does El Paso rank in sunshine percentage compared to the other top Bright and shiny cities?

El Paso is the fourth sunniest city in the United States with 84% annual sunshine. Las Vegas, NV, Phoenix, AZ and Tucson, AZ are all tied for third at 85% annual sunshine, so technically we are in the top six. Did you know there a National Data Base at the National Climatic Data Center (NCAR) in Asheville, North Carolina for all the weather statistics for all the cities where there are weather records observed and kept? This is the place to go if you want any climate data, for any US city that reports, for any specific day you need.

Sunlight signals our brains to produce serotonin, a chemical which promotes happiness and well-being. By contrast, when the brain detects darkness, our bodies produce melatonin, a chemical which promotes sleep cycles. Sunlight leads to health and happiness! Now I talked all about the health benefits of sunshine in my “Weather Talk”: Small Doses of Sunshine Have Amazing Health Benefits http://www.ktsm.com/weather/weather-talk/small-doses-sunshine-have-amazi....

Maybe sunshine is one of the reasons why El Pasoans are so friendly and happy compared to other large cities.

I thought in today’s “Weather Talk” I would take a look at some of the cities with the most yearly sunshine.

Now you know some of the top 10 to get your vitamin D fix here in the U.S.!I have always been a firm believer that everyone, with the proper skin protection, needs a certain amount of natural sunlight to stay healthy and happy. There is science behind that statement. The desert southwest has some of the most top 5 cities with Las Vegas, NV, Phoenix, AZ and Tucson, AZ tied for 3rd and El Paso, TX at the #4 spot. If you live in El Paso, TX you enjoy 84% sunshine a year! El Paso truly is the “Sun City”!
