This Week's Weather (6/21)

Big dome of high pressure continues to bring the scorching heat to the Borderlands. We've hit 100 degrees or hotter 11 times so far this month of June. Temps for the month are running over 4 degrees above normal (through yesterday). Needless to say, it's been a hot month, and summer just began yesterday! The high pressure centered over the heart of Texas is influencing our current heat outbreak. With us near the western edge of the anticyclonic (clockwise) flow around said high pressure center, we're getting moisture pumped into the Borderlands from the south. With moisture and the extreme heat we've been having, expect widely isolated thunderstorms each afternoon/evening through the early half of the weekend. By next week our high pressure system shifts to nearly on top of our region. This will squash rain chances and continue our hot temperatures. I have to mention, the latest model runs keeps us below 100 degrees however through next week (starting tomorrow..Wednesday). Hopefully we can get some relief from this big June heat.

The National Hurricane Center along with nervous citizens of the Gulf Coast are keeping an eye on the latest tropical wave (low pressure area) that is moving southwest of Puerto Rico. This system has the potential to be the first named storm of what could be an active hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean. If this storm gains strength and becomes a tropical storm, it's name would be Alex. We'll keep an eye on it as well.
