The Borderland "Windy Season" usually starts around the end of February and lasts through the beginning of May.  A long series of weather systems push through the Borderland losing most of their moisture, but not their punch.  The majority of these features push in from the West, which means the winds are predominately out the west to southwest. creating the strongest winds and gusts east of the area mountains.  The strongest wind gust ever recorded  was 84 mph on March 10th, 1977, at the start of the "Windy Season", at El Paso International Airport.

Dusty skies are a trademark of the Borderlands stronger windy days and the blowing dust can be dangerous by reducing visibility on I-10 west between Las Cruces and Deming can be especially bad as visibility can get down below a 1/4 of a mile at times.

This year the "Windy Season" started a little early, in mid February and sometimes the season last well into May.   So make sure any outdoor items are secured, drive carefully (especially with high profile vehicles and with motorcycles)  and have your allergy medication handy . Before you know it the winds will be replaced by our sometimes extreme summer heat!
