This past weekend we told you in this blog that a big upper level storm was heading our way. Said storm is set to arrive tomorrow, on schedule, with the threat for severe weather in the Borderlands. The set up for tomorrow is southeast low level (near or just above the ground) flow to be out of the southeast. We will see moisture push in with that surface flow. In addition to that, middle and upper levels of the atmosphere will contain southwesterly flow. This turning of the wind with height is called wind shear. The wind shear along with moisture and an incoming source that will lift the atmosphere (cause air to rise) in the form of our upper level low leads to the threat for those strong to severe storms in the Borderlands. Thunderstorms will likely erupt across the Borderlands during the afternoon hours on Wednesday, with main threat for severe storms to be in the El Paso and Las Cruces area during the late afternoon through the evening. Storms may linger into the night. Main threat will be large hail and damaging winds if you get caught under a storm. There is also a small possibility of tornadoes, though it's unlikely that we'll actually see one. With a cold front marching in for Thursday, there is also a minimal threat for more strong thunderstorms Thursday during the middle of the day. Stay tuned to Newschannel 9 and for the latest on this developing storm system.
