Nick Miller is the anchor for NewsChannel 9 First 5 @ 5pm, and 10pm Nightbeat. He also serves as co-Managing Editor, teaching and mentoring other staff members in the newsroom.
In an odd twist of fate, the U.S. Marine Corps is partially responsible for Nick's career in broadcast journalism. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 1975 with a degree in history, Nick joined the Marines, went to Officer's Candidate School and served on active duty until 1978.
Upon leaving active duty, Nick returned to the University of Arkansas to pursue a Master's Degree in Speech Communication. While on a weekend drill for the Marine Corps Reserve in 1979, he met the News Director at KFSM-TV in Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was hired as a part-time reporter.
When Nick completed his Master's, KFSM hired him full-time and he's been at it ever since. Subsequent jobs were at KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, WAFF-TV in Huntsville, AL, and WOWK-TV in Huntington, WV. He's anchored at KTSM since August 1992.
In addition to his Bachelor's of Arts in History and the Master's in Speech, Nick also holds a Master's Degree in Geography from Marshall University in Huntington, WV. He utilizes the Geography degree by teaching Cultural Geography at the University of Texas at El Paso.
His awards include: Best News Anchor three years in a row by readers of the El Paso Times; Associated Press (Texas Association of Broadcasters) first place award for feature reporting; honored by Discover El Paso for reporting on interesting and historical places in the series "On The Road with Nick Miller"; and twice presented the Watermark award for reporting on water issues.
Nick is a member of University Presbyterian Church and an active member of the Vegetarian Society of El Paso. He has served as a member of the El Paso City-County Animal Shelter Advisory Committee, which aims to make the animal shelter a no-kill facility. He was also one of the original board members for the reconstituted Big Brothers-Big Sisters of El Paso.
Nick enjoys bicycling, yoga, cooking and reading.
