Winds Blow; Aggies Scrimmage

Winds Blow; Aggies Scrimmage
Sports
Saturday, April 14, 2012 - 6:14pm

The New Mexico State football team completed its eighth practice of the short spring schedule, Saturday morning, at Aggie Memorial Stadium. The Aggies practiced in full pads for about two hours in string winds.

“I challenged the offense after Thursday practice and I thought they responded,”head coach DeWayne Walker said. “Now it’s the defense turn to respond on Tuesday. You like to see this competitive edge from the team.”

The offense had a strong practice on Saturday after being challenged by coach Walker. Wide receiver Kemonte Bateman caught three touchdown passes on the day, two from quarterback Andrew McDonald and one from Travaughn Colwell. Colwell also scored a rushing touchdown on a quarterback sneak. Running backs Akeelie Mustafa and Brandon Betancourt also had solid days each scoring a touchdown in the scrimmage.

Despite the elements, practice continued to be noticeably different than in years past as the intensity level was higher and the pace of practice was faster with a high energy tempo.

The defense started off slow to begin the practice but finished strong, holding the office on three straight goal line situations to end practice. Cameron Fuller, Jeremy Edwards and Dele Junaid each grabbed an interception, while Donte Savage and Calvin Cruz put presser on the Aggie quarterback all day long.

The Aggies will be back on the field on Tuesday morning beginning at 7 a.m.
